Collection

Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) holds a vast and varied collection
of Victorian government records, documenting the activities of government
from the earliest days of colonial administration in 1836. PROV currently
holds 83 kilometres of public records at its North Melbourne and Ballarat
regional repositories, and new transfers are continually added.
In the years ahead, this collection of paper records will be augmented
by a growing collection of electronic records as government agencies begin
to transfer more recent records created in the era of the personal computer
to our digital repository.
The memory of events and decisions, great and small, that have shaped
the history of the Colony and State of Victoria are to be found in this
collection. Our collection includes records of immigration and shipping,
criminal trials and prisons, premiers and governors, royal commissions
and boards of inquiry. These records constitute a vital community resource,
that not only tells Victorians where they come from, but who they are
now. Our online catalogue, the Access
to the Collection section of this site, provides ways to explore this
vast resource.
