Corporate Information

Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) seeks to ensure the effective and efficient management, preservation and use of public records in Victoria.

Objectives
Public Record Office Victoria (PROV) is established under the Public Records Act 1973. The objectives of PROV as set out in the Act are, through the Keeper of Public Records, to:
  • issue standards regulating the creation, maintenance and security of public records including the selection and disposal of public records not worthy of preservation;
  • advise and assist agencies in achieving compliance with issued standards;
  • preserve public records of permanent value as the state archives;
  • ensure that the archives are accessible to the government and the people of Victoria.
PROV's core outputs stem from these legislative obligations.

PROV is an agency of Arts Victoria in the Department of Premier and Cabinet. Overall policy direction for Arts Victoria is outlined in the document Creative Capacity + Arts for all Victorians
