Volunteer Program

Public Record Office Victoria has a long standing volunteer program at the Victorian Archive Centre. The work of volunteers allows PROV to provide public access to a range of important historic documents, including the famous volunteer generated indexes to passenger lists on the PROV website.

Volunteers contribute a regular block of time to work on a range of tasks. Ongoing projects include:

  • indexing shipping records
  • transcribing origninal documents for exhibitions
  • IT projects
  • computer processing of digitial records; and
  • conducting tours of the VAC

Click here for more details on some of our current projects.

Special projects are also undertaken from time to time.

Our volunteers come from different backgrounds, but the share an interest in Australian history and a desire to contribute to the services PROV brings to the public. Attention to detail is vital for much of the work and research experience is welcomed.
