INQUISITION

VICTORIA,
TO WIT.

An Inquisition for our Sovereign Lady Queen Victoria, taken at
Melbourne Gaol in
Victoria, the twenty third day of May
A.D. 1892 in the Fifty Fifth year of the Reign
of our said Lady the Queen, before me Samuel
Curtis Candler Gentleman, a Coroner of our Lady the Queen
for Victoria, upon the view of the body of Albert
Williams then and there lying dead, upon the oaths of [see marginal note 1]

good and lawful men of Melbourne in Victoria,
who being duly sworn and charged to inquire, upon the part of our Lady the
Queen, when, where, how, and by what means the said Albert
Williams came by [see marginal note 2] his death, do say upon their
oath that [see marginal note 3] on the 23rd day of May 1892, at
Melbourne, he was executed by hanging in
pursuance of a sentence of death passed on
him by a Judge of the Supreme Court of this
Colony of Victoria.
We find that such sentence was
truly carried into execution.

In witness whereof as well the aforesaid Coroner as the Jurors aforesaid
have to this Inquisition put their hands and seals, on the day and year and at the
place above mentioned

Coroner's Inquest

This Deponent William Henry Anderson
on his oath saith, I am a Sheriff for the Central
residing at Bailiwick of Victoria

The deceased Albert Williams
was sentenced to death by Mr. Justice Hodges on
the 2nd of May instant. I was present when
the sentence was pronounced. The body now shown
to the jury in my presence is that of Albert
Williams. I received the Warrant for his execution
It directs that the sentence shall be carried into
effect this day the 23rd of May within the walls or
within the enclosed yard of the Melbourne Gaol.
I handed the warrant to the Governor of the
Melbourne Gaol to day and demanded the body
of the prisoner and I saw him hanged by his
neck until his body was dead. All the
provisions of the Crimes Act were duly carried
out.

Coroner's Inquest
This Deponent John Shegog
on his oath saith, I am the Governor of the
residing at Melbourne Gaol
I received the prisoner
deceased Albert Williams after he had been
sentenced to death. He has been in my custody
ever since. The deceased prisoner now shown
to the Jury is Albert Williams. This day the
Sheriff demanded his body on the warrant produced,
signed by the Governor and his body was handed
over to him and at ten o'clock he was executed
in my presence and in the presence of such persons
as are by law assigned to be present. The
declaration produced was only signed. I also
saw that the body hanged the lawful time.

Coroner's Inquest
This Deponent Andrew Shields
on his oath saith, I am the Medical Officer of the
[words crossed out] Melbourne Gaol
I saw the deceased prisoner
Albert daily after he was sentenced to death. I
was present this morning and saw him hanged
by the neck until his body was dead in accordance
with the provisions of the Crimes Act. I produce
the certificate. The body now seen by the Jury
is that of Albert Williams.
