Ned
Online is a detailed interactive Online Exhibition based
on the original records held by Public Record Office Victoria (PROV)
concerning the story of Ned Kelly, his family and his gang.
The Kelly story has been told and re-told, elaborated and discussed,
from the time of the Kelly Outbreak, to the present time. For two
years, from 1878 the north-east of Victoria crawled with policemen
looking for the Kelly Gang, whilst Kelly himself told his story
to audiences willing and unwilling to listen.
A major part of this story has always existed in the State Archives
of Victoria (PROV), in the form of the records of the police hunt
and Kelly’s trial and execution. It is an interesting fact
that Kelly documents are still being occasionally discovered in
various government department files in the archives. Two such records
are Ned’s school record and an original 1906 Kelly film poster.
They have been included in these resources.
- This web site was put together by PROV to present some of the official
records that tell the Kelly story.
- These education resources include some additional background information
for students to read and consider when learning about the Kelly
gang story. VELS related activities are also included.
