2007 Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards The awards ceremony for the Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards 2007 was held in Queen's Hall, Parliament House, on Thursday 15 May 2008 . 150 people from across the Victorian government, records management and archival communities attended the ceremony. For the first time community archives were included in the awards. Four awards and three certificate of commendation were awarded in the community archives categories. Each year the Public Records Advisory Council (PRAC) offers the Sir Rupert Hamer Records Management Awards, recognising excellence and innovation in records management in the Victorian public sector. The Hamer Records Management Awards, an initiative of the PRAC, began in 1998. The Awards are named after Sir Rupert Hamer who was the Victorian Premier when the Public Records Act was passed in 1973 and when Public Record Office Victoria opened its first office and repository in 1975. Victorian Government Agency categories Awards are made to agencies achieving the following objectives:
Awards can be made in five Victorian government agency categories. The agency categories are: inner budget agencies, outer budget agencies, local government authorities, regional/rural agencies and small agencies. Community Archives / Places of Deposit categories A new section was added to the Hamer Awards for the 2007 awards to recognise the activities of PROV appointed places of deposit (PoDs). There are three awards available for PoDs themselves and one for government or water authorities that support PoDs in their communities. Judging Panel Award nominations are considered by an Awards Judging Committee which, for the 2007 awards, comprised members of PRAC, the Records Management Association of Australasia (RMAA) and the Australian Society of Archivists Inc. (ASA). Sponsorship and Prizes The RMAA, as the professional body representing the records management industry in Australia , is the sponsor of the government agency categories of the awards. The ASA, Archival Survival Pty Ltd and Albox Australia Pty Ltd are sponsors of the community archives / places of deposit categories. At the awards ceremony, government agency category award winners received a commemorative trophy and free, one-year corporate membership of the RMAA, courtesy of the RMAA. Place of Deposit category award winners received a framed certificate plus their choice of an institutional membership to the ASA or archival material to the value of $150 plus a copy of the publication Keeping Archives Third Edition, courtesy of ASA. They also received from either Albox Australia or Archival Survival, archival material to the value of $300.00. The PoD government category winner received a framed certificate. Certificate of commendation recipients in both government and PoD categories received a framed certificate. The 2007 nomination guidelines can be downloaded below. It is anticipated that nomination guidelines and forms for the 2008 awards will be published by the end of 2008.
