The Chinese Arch was glimpsed as the procession passed Swanston Street. Situated near Little Bourke Street, two pagoda-like towers rose 45 feet either end of a central archway. A band house, which perched upon the central span, issued music played by Chinese performers. Exquisite Chinese silk decorated the structure and a welcome to the royal visitors was emblazoned on the arch in Chinese. The following day, the Chinese community, and a 240 foot long dragon, paraded the streets of Melbourne in front of a cheering crowd who had federated, in part, to preserve a "white" Australia.
