The arch on Swanston Street, north of Flinders Lane, was described as the 'inner door' of the city and marked the place where the procession first turned into Collins Street. The King's Arch was dedicated to the reigning monarch, Edward VII. It stood eighteen metres (sixty feet) high; its central arch, roughly half that height above the roadway was flanked by two smaller archways. The whole bristled with flags and shields and the central piers were decorated with oil portraits of the King and Queen.
