The arch north of Flinders Lane on Swanston street was described as "the inner door" of the city and marked the first turn of the procession into Collins Street. The King's Arch was dedicated to the reigning monarch King Edward VII. It stood 60 feet high, its central arch 36 feet above the roadway was flanked by two smaller archways. The whole bristled with flags and shields and the central piers were decorated with oil portraits of the King and Queen.
