Magnificent triumphal arches spanned the processional route. The Municipal Arch on Princes Bridge served as the gateway to the city before which the Lord Mayor officially welcomed the Duke and Duchess to Melbourne. The arch was designed by Harold Desbrowe Annear, one of a few private architects who created displays for the celebrations. The majority of arches- including the Chinese Arch -were designed by G.B.H. Austin of the Victorian Public Works Department.
