Upon their arrival at St Kilda pier, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York were escorted on a procession through the streets of Melbourne. The cavalcade was a mile long. State and royal carriages were proceeded by a vanguard of 30 mounted constables and several mounted rifle squadrons from the federating states and New Zealand, their khakee uniforms "harmonised perfectly with the cloud of dust that rose in the air and floated along with the troops". Batteries of artillery rattled along after the carriages and were followed by more mounted detachments. People crowded the city streets to view the spectacle: Heads peeped out through clouds of banners; were wedged together at every window and on every balcony; and craned over the attic stories up and up to dizzy altitudes where a passing glance beneath blinded the eyes and turned the head giddy…
