Keepers of Public Records

In Keepers of Public Records PROV staff present their own treasures as keepers of Victoria's archival heritage and explain why they are particularly fond of their chosen item and what makes it stand out for them from the vast array of records in PROV custody. The exhibition is on display in the Corridor Gallery, level 1, Victorian Archives Centre, 99 Shiel Street North Melbourne.

A selection of images from Keepers of Public Records are shown below. There are links to online exhibitions and other parts of the website with more treasures that you can view online.

Women's Suffrage Petition

The petition is a very significant document in the development of Australia's democracy and the development of an international grassroots suffrage movement.

As part of the 150th anniversary of the establishment of responsible government in Victoria, the petition has been digitised in conjunction with the Parliament of Victoria, and can be searched online for the names of signatories.

2008 is the centenary of the granting of Women's right to vote in Victoria. Various commemorative activities are planned, and to start the year off, the Office of Women's Policy is looking to hear from people with stories of their ancestors who signed the petition. Email your story to vicwomenvote@dpcd.vic.gov.au

Ballarat Reform League Charter

The Ballarat Reform League Charter was sucessfully nominated for the Australian Memory of the World Register in 2004. This four-page handwritten manifesto of democratic principles and demands was presented to Governor Hotham in November 1854.

Penned by members of the Ballarat Reform League, the charter asserted the aspirations and demands of the Ballarat mining community. It is a central feature of the Eureka story, and more broadly a significant part of the campaign for democratic reform in the Colony of Victoria. The Eureka rebellion is one of the most significant and influential events in Australia's political and social history. The charter shows the connection of the events in Ballarat to Chartist and other international democratic movements of the time.

The charter, along with many other documents relating to the events surrounding the Eureka stockade, can be viewed in the Eureka on Trial online exhibition. The PROV publication Eureka: From the Official Records also tells the story of the Eureka Stockade through the official documents.
