Local History Grants Program

Local History Grants Program: Round 1 Recipients
The first round of Local History Grants Program funding
was announced by the Premier, Steve Bracks, at the Eureka Stockade Centre
in Ballarat on 7 January 2000. Mr Bracks lauded the enthusiasm and commitment
of local groups in preserving local history, and praised the quality and
variety of the projects funded.
"Preserving local stories is vitally important to
creating and maintaining a real sense of community identity. The Labor
Government aims to support all Victorian communities in their efforts
to remember, retell and celebrate the rich histories of our stateís diverse
districts.
"The Government is committed to programs that support
cultural heritage in regional Victoria. The Local History Grants Program,
which has attracted an extraordinary response from regional Victoria,
is such a program. Regional communities have fascinating and often neglected
stories to tell. The depth of these stories is seen in the many strong,
developed applications for Local History Grants in 1999".
Applications were assessed by an independent seven-member
judging panel representing Victoriaís cultural and historical sector.
66 grants were awarded across Victoria, ranging from $450 to $13,848.
