Sydney, 22nd July 1837.

Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge
the receipt of your letter of the 31st. May,
representing that three of the assigned
servants of Mr. Howey absconded from
his service while on the road from the
Interior to Port Phillip, and were supposed
to have been joined by other absentees,
but although the route they had taken
was, pretty clearly known, you did
not consider it prudent with the means
at your command to send persons to
apprehend them; and requesting that
a Party of Mounted Police may be stationed
at Port Phillip, with some extra horses, either

to assist them in long journeys, or to mount
other men upon, when necessary: and in
reply I am directed by His Excellency
to request that you will state whether
you can procure two or three horses
to mount your Constabulary, who in
that case, could be employed on such
occasions as those referred to -

At the same time, I have the
honor to transmit to you an Extract
of a letter from Captain Maconochie, RN.
to Sir Richard Bourke, and to recommend
your using the Aboriginal Natives as
Constables as therein proposed.
