Report of the Mission to the Aborigines
for the month ended 31st. december 1838
The Blacks of this district about
the latter end of the month left
for the mountainous parts taking
with them nearly all our boys so that
we have now only three remaining
one of these a lad from the Murrumbidgee.
A number of the men who are training
as a Black police also left with
them. Although well fed and clothed
and little exertion required from
them, they cannot yet appreciate
the advantages they derive from their
new employment or value aright
the kindness and attention shewn
to them.
No inducement however
will operate to prevent a Black
from undergoing certain rights or assisting
at certain ceremonies at particular
times: and this is not to be wondered
at as absenting himself from them
on such occasions would draw down
upon him the hatred of his Tribe
ever endanger his life-
