Sir,
I do myself the honor to
acknowledge the receipt of your
letter 47/98 of 26th. January informing
me that the plan of postal communi.
-cation via Rabbit Island, which I
proposed to you, presented too many
obstacles to warrant your bringing
it under the notice of the Governor-
but that you had under consideration
a more certain communication by
means of the Native Police - and that
you had directed Mr Dana to make
arrangements to carry it into effect,
and to consult me as to the best
manner of doing so.-
Although I do not
know what arrangements Mr Dana
has made for carrying your

Ld. overland
Honor’s instructions into effect
other than despatching a Native
Trooper from the Native Police Station
the 1st. of every month- I cannot
but feel assured that this arrangement
will afford the District a greater
facility of communication than
the plan I proposed - more especially
since the line of road recently opened,
and reported upon in my letter No 30/47
will, it is supposed be passable at
all seasons, and the journey from
Melbourne to the Native Police Station,
or to the Police office at Flooding Creek
can be performed in four days and
a half-

Sir,
Since the first settlement
of this District, there has always
been felt, both by the Government,
and by private Individuals, very
much inconvenience arising from the
want of communication with Sydney
and Melbourne.- So great indeed
to the Government has been this
inconvenience, that Returns of
consequence from this office have
more than once occupied at least
three months in their transit to
Melbourne; and communications
also of importance from the
Colonial Secretary’s Office in Sydney
have not unfrequently been received
here upwards of two months after
