Commr Crown Lands Office
Gipps Land, 24th April 1847
Sir,
I regret to have to
inform Your Honor that my an-
ticipations as to the result of our
overtures to Bungeleene have not
yet been realized - owing apparently to
the bad faith of that chief, whose
messengers have in every instance
turned from the course of their
mission.
With a view to be no longer
duped by this wily Black, I made
the necessary preparations for the
departure for the mountains of all
the party except four to be left in
charge of the women and children,
with Bungeleene as guide. On
this plan being communicated
to him he seemed loth to accompany
us

His Honor

we would postpone the expedition
for three moons, when he would
be willing to go. This proposition
was not of course agreed to.
He was given to understand that
he must proceed with us in two
days time.
His determination to thwart
us was clearly shewn by the
clever escape of himself and son,
a young man about twenty
years of age, from the Camp
without being perceived; leaving
his wives and three children
in our hands. Although a search
was set on foot both by land
and water he could not be
traced beyond Raymond Island,
a distance of three or four miles.
He returned on the night of the
second day, perhaps with the hope
of carrying off his family, having,
as he said, lost his son who
was drowned in attempting to
swim
