party. The authority for this story
is a son of Bungeleene who ac-
companied him. Their affinity
would incline me to suspect a
misinterpretation of Tack-awadden.
However, be that as it may, it is
clear that if there be a white woman
with the Blacks, it is their de-
termination not to give her up;-
and, without their aid, or the aid
of some of their influential men,
judging from experience, a further
search for her at present would
be useless and unprofitable. I
have therefore broken up the party,
and have consequently no means
of detaining Bungeleene, his
women and children, but have
requested Mr. Dana, Commandant
of the Native Police to take charge
of them at Head Quarters until
Your Honor shall decide what
further steps are to be taken-

I may add that an Expedition
among the mountains during the
winter months would be almost impracticable
and that the winter has already
set in with severity.

I have further to acquaint
Your Honor that the figure-head
of the Vessel in which the un-
fortunate woman is said by
the Blacks to have been wrecked,
is in my possession. It is
the bust of a female, not quite
the size of life, rudely carved,
and appears to have been painted
red, with the eyes white. Most of
the red paint is worn off, leaving
the priming of a dark color. The
figure-head has evidently be-
longed to a small craft, probably
Colonial - but certainly was
never intended to represent
Britannia-

Your Honor’s most obedt Servant
