on the 19th. September last.-
The issuing of Rations, or
affording aid in any shape,
or under any circumstances,
to the private expedition, must
in some measure connect
it with, without making it
responsible to, the Government;
and whenever the latter is
called upon to assist, it
ought also to have the
right and the power to
control. It is with much
pain therefore, that the Governor
feels compelled to express
His regret at the step which
Your Honor has taken; and
which His Excellency cannot
but apprehend may tend to
embarrass
embarrass the Government, more
especially as Mr. Tyers was
already fully authorized
to take any steps, short
of violence, for the recovery
of the woman.
Your Honor will of
course understand, that
while His Excellency feels
it His duty to dissent
from your proceedings,
He feels convinced that
you acted from the
best motives, and with
the view of facilitating
the object which the
Government is so
anxious
anxious to effect.
I have the honor to be,
Sir,
Your Honor’s
Most obedient Servant
E. Deas Thomson
