No 1/47
Commr Crown Lands Office
Alberton, 9th. January 1847
Sir,
In my letter No 130/46
of the 29th. December I had the
honor to inform you of a collision
between the Native Police under
Mr Dana, and the Aborigines at
the Snowy River -
I have now the honor
to transmit copies of depositions
taken in the case - as well as
a Report of the proceedings of
the party which I have been obliged
to obtain from Trooper Cowan
of the Border Police, in consequence
of Mr. W. Dana failing to comply
with my request to furnish me
with his Report -
From the Depositions of
Messrs.
To
His Honor
The Superintendent
Port Phillip

Messrs. DeVilliers and Warman
and from the Report or Journal
of Cowan I regret to observe
that Mr. W. Dana’s proceedings
have not been guided by
prudence; and fear that his
recent expedition has tended
to retard, rather than to forward,
the rescue of the unfortunate
white woman.
Considering, that after the
System pursued, I should
not be justified in committing
to Mr. Dana the charge of another
expedition, I have requested
him to confine [crossed out: his duties]
himself to the duties of pro-
tecting the Settlers against the
depredations of the Aborigines -
until I shall receive further
instructions from Your Honor
on the subject
In the mean time
Mr DeVilliers is voluntarily
following
following up the pacific system
with which I commenced
and which received the approval
of His Honor Mr La Trobe - and
I trust Mr De Villiers will not
be disappointed in his expectation
that his endeavours will shortly
be crowned with success.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your Honor’s Most obedt Sert
