1. Mr. Macalister commences
by saying “On behalf of other
Stockholders and myself”-
I beg to observe that having
been under the impression
that the Native Police had
hitherto given universal satis-
faction to the Settlers of this
District, I shewed the Copy
of Mr. Macalister’s letter to
Mr. Raymond, (also a Settler
and a magistrate resident in
this District) and requested
him to ascertain, as far as
was in his power, if I had
been deceived, or if any of
the Settlers really had com-
plained, or had cause to com-
plain of my interference
with the Native Police, or of
my dirilation of duty among
the men of that corps.

of the Native Police has given
general satisfaction. Mr Raymond
speaks the opinion of himself,
and all the Settlers with whom
he has spoken on the subject,
being the majority resident in
the District.

2. Mr. Macalister says, “I am
not aware upon what principle
Mr Tyers presumes a right to
control the officers and troopers
of the Native Police more than any
other Magistrate acting in the
District. He certainly cannot do
so upon the grounds of his devoting
more time, trouble and expense
upon Police duties than any other
Magistrates are undergoing, and
there are other Magistrates in the
District fully as competent as
Mr. Tyers, to direct the Native Police,
when such may be necessary.

whether I devote more time,
trouble and expense upon Police
duties (although I believe I do)
