Letter 48/7, Page 1

The absurd Story of the White Lady in captivity
among the Savages of Gipps Land and which
led to such extraordinary and fatal results
against that unfortunate section of aborigines
has subsequently induced the Gipps Land Natives
to surrender a number of their Females to the
Boomerangs or Western Port Tribes instead of the
latter therefore becoming defunct as was anticipated.
There is now the probability of their numbers
increasing. Friendly relations have been
established but I question whether this
consummation is desirable as the Gipps
Land Natives visit Melbourne and I believe
the whole of the tribes have been invited to come
as a preventative I have advised a reservation

Native Police

The reserve at Narre Narre Warren selected
about seven years since for the aboriginal Natives
of the South Eastern District, is situated about
twenty miles East from Melbourne and is
now in the occupation of the Native Police.

This Establishment comprises three principal
and two or three subordinate Officers Europeans
with an average of about thirty five to forty men
aboriginal Natives.

The authorised expenditure is Two thousand
five hundred and fifty pounds Narre Narre Warren
is the only reserve for the aboriginal Natives of
the South Eastern District, and is generally
encroached upon. I should suppose to the extent
of at least one half by the neighbouring Squatters.
