Commandant
Native Police

51/691
30th October 1851

I have the honor by desire of His
Excellency the Lieutenant Governor to inform you
that it has been notified to this Office by the Police
Magistrate at Boninyong that four of the native
troopers under his orders deserted on the night
of the 23rd Instant and have not since been heard of

Two named Sambo and Jack went from
Ballarat, and two other named Oliver and Isaac
went from Boninyong all of them leaving everything
except their blankets. There was a rumour
that the men had gone towards the Wimmera
District but the Police Magistrate’s force was so
busily engaged that he was unable to cause the
deserters to be pursued
