Thomas Henty was born on 24 August 1836 at Launceston, Tasmania,
the son of James Henty and Charlotte Carter. He had two brothers
Henry (1833-1912) and Herbert James (1834-1902) and
two sisters. Their father set up a family firm, James Henty
& Company, in Melbourne which Thomas' two brothers
later joined as partners.
Thomas at first represented the family firm in Launceston and
then managed the family property at Round Hill near Albury,
and then at Muntham near Coleraine in Victoria from 1837. Thomas
was a good manager and helped the family firm in times of financial
difficulty brought about by Herbert's poor management.
He turned 21 years of age in August 1857. In 1878 Thomas moved
to Melbourne and served on the committee of the Victorian Racing
Club. He owned several well-known racehorses.
The Hentys had been granted land at Portland Bay which they
first settled in November 1834.
