Hens in Battery Cages 1994
Presented by Carole Marple MP
This petition opposed the use of battery hen cages for egg production. Battery hens are locked in small wire cages, unable to walk freely or stretch their wings. They are also subjected to a painful process of ‘de-beaking’. This system was abolished in Tasmania, Queensland and ACT in 2000.
Containing more than 44,000 signatures, this is one of the largest petitions presented in Victoria.

Possums, City of Bayside 2003
Presented by Murray Thompson MP
Bayside residents petitioned the Government to act to address the large number of possums inhabiting the area. They complained that possums were causing property damage and “disturbance to neighbourhood amenity”. Possum numbers are high in the suburbs because suburban habitats provide a wide range of highly nutritious plant foods and abundant nesting sites in building roofs.
