Using this record
This series is an index of people who lodged petitions for divorce with the Supreme Court of Victoria between 1861 and 1924. Details given are the names of the petitioner for the divorce, the respondent and any co-respondents to the petition and the case number assigned by the Supreme Court.

Entries were listed in the index alphabetically by the first letter of the surname of the petitioner in the order in which petitions were received and registered by the Supreme Court. For each alphabetical listing, entries are subdivided on the basis of year of registration. By noting the year and the case number of a petition for divorce, more detailed records can be ordered for viewing in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room. Records from VPRS 5334/P0 Divorce Cause Books can be accessed by ordering the unit with the required date range, and records from VPRS 283/P0 Divorce Case Files can be ordered by selecting the item with the matching case number in the 'Description' field on the Consignment Details page.

Ballarat cases were also listed in the index from 1910 onwards The word 'Ballarat' appears in the column for case numbers. Cases for Ballarat (and Bendigo) do not appear to have been registered with case numbers. The records for Ballarat cases, VPRS 552/P0 Divorce Case Files, can also be ordered for viewing in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room.
