Downloading these files
The files on this page contain the complete text of the volumes in the series and are very large. The files will take some time to download entirely.

To speed viewing of its contents use the ‘Bookmark’ feature of your .pdf viewer. The
bookmarks list the names of patients in this volume. If you have the Acrobat Reader version 7.0 you can use the built-in search routine to search the bookmarks for the name you are looking for.

If you click on a bookmark link the pdf viewer will jump to downloading that page. You can then view or print that entry. If you have captured the information you need, use the 'back' button of your browser to stop the download of the file. You will need to wait until the complete file has finished downloading before you can save a copy to your local hard drive.

Using this record
These volumes contain case histories of female patients admitted to Beechworth Asylum
between 1878 and 1912. Case histories were recorded chronologically by date of admission of the patient. Volumes 2 and 4 begin with alphabetical list of patients' names for finding the page number of their case history. For volumes 1-3, there is generally a two page spread for each patient's case history, with the patient's name at the top of the left-hand page, and the date of admittance at the top of the right-hand page. Volume 4 generally has 4 pages set aside for each patient (sometimes with an accompanying photograph of the patient).

Further resources
If you do not know the date of admission for the patient you are seeking in volumes 1 and 3, this can be obtained by consulting either VPRS 7446/P1 Alphabetical Lists of Patients in Asylums, volume 4 (1867-1884) online or by ordering the appropriate volume from VPRS 7410/P1 Annual Examination of Patients Registers (1889-1912) for viewing in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room.
