Using this record
The register contains an alphabetical list of patients admitted to Ballarat Asylum for the period
1877 to 1879 and subsequently to the Sunbury Asylum for the period 1879 to 1907. The volume
is arranged alphabetically by the first letter of patients' surnames and then chronologically by
date of admission within each alphabetical grouping.

If you have found a patient's name and date of admission from the register, you can use the
date of admission in most cases to find a more complete patient record in either VPRS 7405/P1
Case Books of Male Patients or VPRS 7406/P1 Case Books of Female Patients. To view
these series in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room, order the volume with the date
range corresponding to the date of admission.
