Downloading these files
The files on this page contain the complete text of the volumes in the series and are very large. The files will take some time to download entirely.

To speed viewing of its contents use the ‘Bookmark’ feature of your .pdf viewer. The bookmarks jump to the beginning of each letter of the alphabet in the index, and the page numbers in the volume that the index entries refer to.

If you click on a bookmark link the pdf viewer will jump to downloading that page. You can then view or print that entry. If you have captured the information you need, use the 'back' button of your browser to stop the download of the file. You will need to wait until the complete file has finished downloading before you can save a copy to your local hard drive.

Using this record
This register is a chronological record of patients admitted to Ballarat Asylum for the period 1877 to 1879 and subsequently to the Sunbury Asylum for the period 1879 to 1907. Each volume contains an alphabetical index of patients' names for finding the page number upon which the patient's entry will be found. The entries in each volume are arranged chronologically by the patient's date of admission. You should consult the volume which corresponds to the date range in which you think the patient was
admitted.

The first 44 pages of the first unit of this series list patients admitted to the Ballarat Asylum between 1877 and 1880 and who were subsequently transferred to Sunbury.

If you have found a patient's name and date of admission from the register, you can use the date of admission in most cases to find a more complete patient record in either VPRS 7405/P1 Case Books of Male Patients or VPRS 7406/P1 Case Books of Female Patients. To view these case books in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room, order the volume with the date range corresponding to the date of admission.

In addition, when you find a patient's admission number you can also locate their admission warrants, which were papers issued on the admission of a patient to a lunatic asylum. The actual warrants can be found in VPRS 8259/P1 Admission Warrants - Male Patients and VPRS 8261/P1 Admission Warrants - Female Patients. To view these records in the Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room, order the item or unit that has the corresponding admission number and number range you require.
