Using this record
This is a subject index of inward correspondence received by the Melbourne
Town Clerk's Office. When searching for a subject heading:
- Search the unit with the year span in which you are interested
- Find the subject heading you are interested in. If you fail to find
the subject that you are searching for, check under the 'Miscellaneous'
listings. Each alphabetical division begins with such a miscellaneous
section (that is, 'A' Miscellaneous is followed by Abattoirs; 'B' Miscellaneous
is followed by Bridges, and so on).
- In volumes that span a number of years, entries under a subject heading
may be subdivided by years. Search the entries under the year you are
interested in.
- Entries are listed with annual single numbers. An annual single number
(for example, 68/438) is composed of the year in which a letter was
received and its number in the sequence of correspondence received for
that year. From 1946, entries also include the page number of the corresponding
entry in the register VPRS 8907/P1 Town Clerk's Register of
Inward Correspondence.
- Once you have located a reference to correspondence of interest,
it may be possible to find further correspondence received on this matter
by checking the register. The registers are held in the repository and
need to be ordered for viewing in the Reading Room.
- Consult the register to check if correspondence has been top numbered.
The final number is required to order a file in VPRS 3183 Town
Clerk's Correspondence Files II for viewing in the Victorian
Archives Centre Reading Room.
