1. PROV Collection on PictureAustralia
PROV has joined PictureAustralia, the National Library of Australia's picture sharing service. The website http://www.pictureaustralia.org provides a single website to search the image collections of many major Australian cultural institutions, directing site visitors back to the website of each institution to view the images they search for.

PROV's online contributions include three pictures of Ned Kelly, approximately 7000 Public Transport Corporation (PTC) images and 2750 images from the Melbourne 1956 Olympics. Another 11000 PTC images will be published to the PictureAustralia website shortly.

2. Exhibitions
*People and Parliament: Landmark Decisions 1855-2006
You have only a few weeks left to see People and Parliament: Landmark Decisions 1855-2006, the current free exhibition on display at the VAC.

Developed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the establishment of the Parliament of Victoria and the introduction of ‘responsible government’ in the fledgling colony, People and Parliament explores landmark decisions made by various Victorian governments over the past century and a half.

Featuring original government records and historic items from PROV's holdings and various other government agencies, People and Parliament: Landmark Decisions 1855–2006 closes on 31 May 2006. Admission is free. A glossy full-colour catalogue of the exhibition is available for purchase for $5.00.

Free educational resources for primary and secondary students, together with transcriptions of many of the records featured in the exhibition, can be accessed online at http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/peopleparliament

*Town of North Melbourne
Following on from People and Parliament in the exhibition space at the VAC will be PROV's next exhibition, Town of North Melbourne. This exhibition, focusing on the late nineteenth century to the early 1900s, takes a snap shot of the lives and stories of ordinary people living and working around North Melbourne. The exhibition is essential viewing for anyone interested in local history research.

Town of North Melbourne is free of charge to visit. It will be available to view from 12 June to 27 2006 at the VAC.

*Touring Exhibitions
PROV has a number of touring exhibitions and displays which are loaned out free of charge to cultural, historical and educational institutions, libraries and various other organisations throughout Victoria.

Bigamy, Theft and Murder: The Extraordinary Tale of Frederick Bailey Deeming is not only one of PROV’s most popular online exhibitions, it is also one of its most enduring. The time has come to refresh the look and layout of the online exhibition, while retaining the essential elements of the tale that has made it such a favourite.

4. Seminars 2006
*Seminar Series February-June 2006
The Seminar Series for 2006 is proving once again to be popular among researchers wanting to learn more about using records at PROV. Seminars have already been held on education records and family history research however we still have a number of seminars on offer.

Our next seminars, to be held at Victorian Archives are: 'Ship to Shore: Looking at Immigration Records on Saturday 29 April 10.30am-12.30pm; 'Not on the Parish Plan!', on Wednesday 24 May 10.30am-12.30pm and 'Chinese Market Gardeners and Miners', on Wednesday 21 June 10.30am-12.30pm. 'Mining Records at the BAC' will be held at the Ballarat Archives Centre on Wednesday 28 June from 10.30am to 12.30pm. Places are still available in all these seminars but book in early as they fill up fast!

*Archival Support Program (ASP), February-November 2006
The next ASP on offer is 'Next Steps in the Archives' on Saturday 27 May at Castlemaine Historical Society. It is a day of hands-on workshops where participants will apply some basic archival skills. Topics include applying your acquisition policy, arrangement and description, practical examples of software use and basic preservation and storage. The cost to attend for the whole day is $20.00 (incl. morning tea, lunch and GST).

5. Saturday Openings, April-June 2006
The Victorian Archives Centre Reading Room is open on the second and last Saturday of each month. Saturday openings for April-June are: 8 and 29 April, 13 and 27 May, 10 and 24 June. Note that PROV now opens on a second and last Saturday of a month even if there is a long weekend, which is a change of policy from previous years - this year we open on 23 Saturdays.

6. Tours of the VAC 2006
Tours of the VAC exhibition space, reading room and repository continue to be very popular and will continue in 2006. They are held on the last Friday of every month and on open Saturdays.
