14. About this publication

1. 50,000th VEO transferred to the Digital Archive
PROV celebrated the permanent storage of its 50,000th electronic record into the Digital Archive in June of this year. The Digital Archive has been fully operational for less than one year and is already successfully transferring thousands of records every week. These records are available to view via our public website so we encourage you to look online at www.access.prov.vic.gov.au and browse through our physical and digital collections.

2. Exhibitions
Open until 30 September: The Town of North Melbourne 1905
The 'Town of North Melbourne 1905' exhibition was developed with Melbourne City Council and Hotham History Project. The exhibition gives the visitor a glimpse of the lives and stories of ordinary people living and working in North Melbourne. With its proximity to markets, abundant water supply for industry, port and rail terminals, it became the storehouse and transfer depot, processing and manufacturing centre for much of Victoria’s produce.

Opening 11 November at PROV: ‘And your petitioners humbly pray…150 years of Petitions in Victoria’
Over the past 150 years, hundreds of petitions have been presented to the Victorian Parliament. Petitions are an important way for the people to have their views heard. Although they may not always result in immediate change, petitions help to raise public awareness and shape opinions. This exhibition will give the visitor a chance to lift the archive lid and view a selection of previously unseen petitions.

The petitions range from the quirky one-offs to those that have strongly influenced Victorian legislation, including Sunday trading, Daylight saving and the famous Ned Kelly petition (VPRS 4966/P0 Unit 3 Item 1) ‘Your humble PETITIONERS… respectfully pray that the Life of the CONDEMNED man, EDWARD KELLY, may be spared’. It has been estimated that over 30,000 signatures were collected for the Ned Kelly petition and it was formally tabled before the Governor-in-Council, but the request was not granted.

This exhibition has been developed by PROV in partnership with the Parliament of Victoria, as part of celebrations for the150th anniversary of responsible government in Victoria. Opens 10 October to 1 November Queens Hall, Parliament.

Both exhibitions can be viewed at the VAC 99 Shiel Street North Melbourne. Educational materials are available online: www.prov.vic.goc.au/online

6. Provenance
The Journal of Public Record Office Victoria will be available online in late September www.prov.vic.gov.au/provenance.

This year's issue includes: a biographical sketch of James Acoy the Castlemaine court interpreter, businessman, miner and settler who was imprisoned for corruption in 1869; an article examining the trial of three policemen charged with the murder of an Aboriginal man named Jim Crow in Victoria's Wimmera district in October 1843; two articles presenting true crime stories from the 1920s drawn mainly from Criminal Trial Briefs held in PROV’s custody; and a researcher's report on finding primary sources (from PROV and other collections) to write a biography about Victoria’s cricketing great Bill Ponsford.

Provenance is a free, scholarly, refereed journal published online by PROV. The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles, as well as other written contributions, that contain research drawing on records in PROV's holdings. Please send any queries, comments and submissions regarding Provenance to the Editor, Sebastian Gurciullo, who can be contacted by email at sebastian.gurciullo@dvc.vic.gov.au or by telephone on (03) 9348 5600.
