1. Local History Grants Program 2007 -- now
accepting applications
The Local History Grants Program supports projects that preserve and present
Victorian local history. Local History Grants are available for projects
that record history as it was experienced in local communities throughout
Victoria.
Applications close 5:00 pm Monday 26 March 2007. Application forms and
further information are available through the Grants@DVC website <http://www.grants.dvc.vic.gov.au>
or phone Information Victoria on 1300 366 356. You can also visit the
PROV website at <http://www.prov.vic.gov.au.lhgp>
for further details.
If you have already completed a local history project, you might want
to consider entering it in Information Victoria's Victorian Community
History Awards. Entries close 30 March 2007. Visit <http://www.information.vic.gov.au>
for further details.
2. Volunteers News
PROV volunteers, through their work indexing passenger lists for the Outwards
Passenger List Index Project, have come across many exciting finds. Opera
companies, famous theatre personalities including Lola Montez, clerics,
politicians and entrepreneurs who founded enduring Australian companies
are amongst the entries that have been indexed.
Recently volunteers came across the passenger list on which the first
Australian Test Cricket team leaving for New Zealand in 1878 is shown.
This team included Spofforth, the Demon Bowler, who 'got batsmen out with
a glare'; Bannerman, who scored the first Test century; and Conway 'the
organiser'. Ten years previously Conway had organised and accompanied
the first cricket team to tour England. This was the famous Indigenous
team of cricketers.
As the volunteers return to PROV after their New Year festivities, and
the indexing project continues, we anticipate more intriguing passenger
discoveries.
To find out more about Volunteers' activities at PROV, contact the Manager,
Volunteers Program on (03) 9348 5600.

New Displays in VAC Repository
There are two new displays in the VAC repository which feature intriguing
glimpses into the range of records in PROV's custody. The first is based
on Clunes, a historic township known as Victoria's first goldfield. This
display includes photos and records of the town, school photos and gold
license applications.
The second display features a miscellany of public records comprising
interesting and quirky documents selected from varies series in PROV's
archives. Items such as Squizzy Taylor's prison record and photographs
of the Melbourne Zoo's Queenie the Elephant are on display.
In addition to the above new displays, there is on show ephemera from
the State Bank of Victoria Collection, which is reported on extensively
in the current edition of PROactive no. 39.
To see all three of these displays, book into a free volunteer led tour
of the VAC. (See item 13 for full details of the VAC tours.)

7. Koorie Records Unit: wilam naling ...knowing who you are...
projects
wilam naling…knowing who you are… is a report from
the Victorian Koorie Records Taskforce coordinated by the Koorie Records
Unit (KRU) of PROV and Aboriginal Affairs Victoria. The report presents
recommendations to the Victorian Government regarding improving access
to records of the Stolen Generations. Funding has been received to enable
the KRU to coordinate six projects to meet the improved access to records
requirements that are specified in the report's recommendations.
The projects include: the PROV Koorie Index of Names (KIN); Common Access
Guidelines; Small grants for non government record holders; Cultural awareness
training for government record holders (Workshop); Promoting good record
keeping in Koorie communities (Workshop) and Training for non government
record holders (Workshop).
Much progress has been made to organise and coordinate the combined workshops
with 7 regional workshops targeted at Koorie and other communities throughout
Victoria and one metro workshop. The first workshop will be held at Lakes
Entrance over two days on Tuesday 27 and Wednesday 28 March. For further
details and bookings, contact Kathy Nicholls, Project Officer, Koorie

However, they sadly farewelled Sharon Curtis who returned to Sydney to
lead another dedicated project team.
The GSU project is busily digitising the images for probates 1889 to

11. Mining Shareholder's Index 1857-1886 (CD ROM)
This publication, produced by Marion McAdie in 2006, is an index of names
of shareholders in mining companies extracted from the Victorian Government
Gazette 1857-1886. It lists 9000 Australian mining companies and over
228,000 names and addresses of mining company shareholders.
Data includes name of shareholder, address, occupation (after 1872),
number of shares purchased, value of shares, name of company, location
of mining operations, date and Gazette reference.
There are two databases on the CD: the Company index and the Shareholders
index, both searchable using Microsoft Excel. They are similarly arranged
with a separate worksheet for each letter of the alphabet and then listed
within alphabetical order for each letter. The indexes may be used to
narrow down searching for mining company records at PROV.
A copy of this CD has been donated to PROV and will be available in the
North Melbourne Reading Room after processing into our catalogue. It is
for sale from the author, Marion McAdie who can be contacted by email
at <arabooks@netconnect.com.au>.
