3 Representation of Metadata The VERS metadata scheme has been represented in three ways:
In all representations we distinguish between containers and simple metadata elements. A simple metadata element contains a simple textual value such as a date. A container contains other metadata elements. These other metadata elements may be containers or simple metadata elements. We also distinguish between metadata elements that are mandatory, conditional, and optional. A mandatory element must always be present in a VEO of a particular type. A conditional element must be present if a particular condition is met. A typical condition is if the VEO is produced according to Version 2 of the Specification. An optional element may be present or not according to the needs of the users. | |||||
