3. Standard Long Term Preservation Formats 3.6. JPEG-2000 Usage Use for continuous tone images (e.g. photos). It is recommended that JPEG 2000 is used in preference to JPEG for images that have sharp edges, or are highly compressed. For other images JPEG is recommended due its greater popularity. Standard The image must conform to ISO 15444-1:2004, ‘Information Technology – JPEG 2000 image coding system: Core coding system’. ISO 15444-1 is also published as ITU-T T.800. Note that restricting acceptance to the Core coding system means that all JPEG-2000 images must be encoded using JP2. Suggested value of File Encoding (M128) The following text is recommended for inclusion in the File Encoding (M128) element when the Encoding contains a JPEG 2000 image. The content of the DocumentData element is a JPEG 2000 image. The file conforms to ISO 15444-1:2004, ‘Information Technology – JPEG 2000 image coding system: Core coding system’ (also known as ITU-T T.800). The file has been encoded using Base64, which is defined in IETF RFC 2045 ‘Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (MIME) Part One: Format of Internet Message Bodies’, Section 6.8 ‘Base64 Content-Transfer-Encoding’. | |||||
