1.0 Introduction The purpose of VERS is the production of standard digital objects that will preserve electronic records indefinitely. Conceptually, VERS is an exchange standard that allows transfer of metadata (and content) from the system it was created in to future systems as yet unbuilt. A key aspect of the preservation is converting the electronic record to a specific physical representation (archival format). A VERS Encapsulated Object (VEO) – a record – is designed to be self documenting so that the record can subsequently be extracted without reference to external documentation. VERS metadata elements contain information that describes the encoding used and structure of the record. VERS also identifies a specific encoding of the metadata (see PROS 99/007 Specification 3: VERS Standard Electronic Record Format). A VEO includes metadata that supports the management, finding, and retrieval of the electronic record. The metadata specified for these functions is the metadata used by the National Archives of Australia (NAA) in its metadata standard. This metadata is different to that identified in the VERS Final Report. Descriptive information about the NAA Record Keeping Metadata has been derived directly from the NAA’s Recordkeeping Metadata Standard for Commonwealth Agencies but, where necessary, has been adapted to suit the Victorian administrative environment. | |||||
